Our heavy-duty chicken wire is designed to provide an extremely high level of corrosion and rot resistance in both above ground and buried installations. We offer two options, both galvanized and stainless steel. Our galvanized chicken wire is galvanized twice, once prior to the wire being woven and then hot dipped galvanized after weaving. The result is a ultra-durable steel chicken wire which will stand up to the elements and even boasts an estimated lifespan of 7-12+ years even when buried.

For the ultimate in material longevity we also offer stainless steel chicken wire which is even more durable than our galvanized wire and is constructed from T-304 / 18-8 stainless steel which provides an extremely high level of durability when installed in wet environments. The stainless steel chicken wire provides an estimated lifespan of 12+ years when buried underground in moist environments.

Both options are available in 5’ x 100’ Rolls and provide a mesh opening of 3/4”.

HOW IS OUR WIRE MESH DIFFERENT?

Our wire mesh has undergone a very specific manufacturing process which provides the mesh with extreme resistance to breakdown when exposed to moisture.

Our mesh is so moisture resistant that it can even be buried underground for years without breakdown.

What About Moles?

Although Gopher Block® is not specifically designed to prevent mole intrusion, we have had customers that have installed it for this application and the gopher wire has proved effective at deterring moles from tunneling into landscape and lawn areas.

"After tilling and clearing the loam from our yard, I installed the gopher wire roll. I then applied another 6 inches of topsoil/compost and then laid 1,800 square feet of zeon zoysia sod. The gopher wire roll is an incredible product and in my mind worth every penny. I have already seen the results. There is an adjacent section where our yard meets the neighbors yard. Given the frequent watering/worms, etc. our yard has become an attractive site for moles. Well, our yard has been perfectly protected from the moles, and our neighbors yard is full of new holes and tunnels. They just cannot seem to penetrate the wire roll. The quality is also impressive. Does not even compare to the junk available at “unnamed big box” hardware store (trust me, I looked!) Anyway, here are several photos of the installation process and the final product. "

Understanding The Benefits Of Heavy-Duty Chicken Wire

About Chicken Wire

Chicken wire, often referred to as chicken wire mesh, is made from galvanized steel wire in a hexagonal pattern. The pattern provides flexibility and strength while ensuring the mesh will resist tension on all sides and remain long-lasting and versatile.

Originally, chicken wire was the solution for containing chickens at minimal cost. Over time, gardeners realized the potential for using chicken wire to protect their plants while its lightweight and flexibility made it easy to work with. Artists appreciated its ability to be reshaped for their creative projects. In the world of construction, chicken wire has been used as reinforcement and stability to various structures including plaster walls. There is no doubt, chicken wire has evolved into many great uses.

These days, chicken wire comes in different coatings, including PVC for added strength along with stainless steel and copper for specific applications. Chicken wire is woven in different ways for many uses while remaining long-lasting and adaptable.

About Chicken Wire Fencing

In its design, chicken wire mesh is stronger than standard wire mesh for more demanding requirements. Even though chicken wire fencing will keep your chickens in place and safe, it's also an excellent choice for partitions to protect your vegetables from pests and even serve as garden decorations. Due to its long-lasting properties, it will stand up to outdoor elements and time.

Purchasing And Practical Advice

If you are in the market for chicken fencing, you can go online and find many reputable places that sell this high-quality product. You will find a large range of different sizes of chicken wire of fencing to meet your needs.

How To Work With The Fencing

Due to its flexible qualities, cutting should be a smooth process. If you are using tin strips, it can cover a larger area and allow for longer cuts.

After you have finished cutting, run your glove down the edges to see if you have any sharp edges or protruding wires. If you find any sharp ends take your pliers and fold them back or twist them onto the main body of the wire. This will keep you or someone else from running the risk of getting cut when handling the wiring.

It's time to flatten the wire. Chicken wire will often curl up after cutting, especially if the wiring was initially rolled. Lay it flat using your hands or a heavy object to flatten it out. It will make it easier to work with when applying it to your project. As always, make sure you are wearing your gloves.

Let's get started installing the chicken wire.

Carefully Position The Wire:

To align the wire, hold it against the brick wall making sure it is taut and correctly aligned. It can be helpful if you have someone to help you out by holding it in place.

You should temporarily keep the wiring in place securing it at the top corners using U-shaped staples or masonry nails.

Secure The Chicken Wire:

U-shaped staples are perfect for attaching the chicken wire to brick walls. Start at one corner and hammer in the U-shaped staples to the mortar joints at regular intervals making sure the wire is taut. These spaces are horizontal gaps between the bricks. The joints are softer than the bricks making it much easier to secure the staples.

Note: If you do not have U-shaped staples, you can use masonry nails. That said, these nails will take more work. Position the chicken wire against the brick wall and hammer the nails through the wire into the mortar joints.

Added Stability

If you are working with a large area or you are worried that heavier items might be placed against the chicken wire, like climbing plants, you should add horizontal wooden battens for extra stability. Once done, attach the chicken wire to the battens.

Perform Regular Checks

You should regularly check the chicken wire's attachments, especially after a serious storm. You want to be sure it's still securely in place.

Attaching Chicken Wire To A Hedge

You can attach chicken wire to a hedge for various reasons. It will offer added structure, protect the hedge from pests, and support climbing plants. Here's how to go about having a secure and effective attachment:

Make Preparations - Here are tools and items you need in your arsenal:

• The chicken wire mesh
• garden stakes
• round fence posts
• fencing pins
• twine or garden ties
• wire cutters
• hammer or rubber mallet
• a tape measure
• gloves

Always wear gloves for safety when handling chicken wire to protect from cuts. When using a hammer or a rubber mallet, wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from any flying debris.

Grounding The Wire

If you are experiencing windy weather or windy conditions that are typical for your area, take U Pins and drive the chicken wire into the ground to keep it in place.

Make Any Adjustments And Finish Up

Once the chicken wire is in place, be sure to trim any excess wire from the sides as well as the top using wire cutters. Fold back any sharp edges or protruding wires using pliers to create a nice look and keep you safe.

Secure Any Loose Ends:

If you run into any sharp edges or protruding wire, fold them back and then secure the ends using garden ties. You will create a nice look.

Climbing Plants:

If you want climbing plants on the hedge, you must make sure they are supported. Make sure the holes in the mesh are big enough for the plants to weave through, but not so large the plants will not have proper support.

Regular Maintenance And Check-Ups:

You should check the chicken wire's attachments, especially after experiencing a large storm, to ensure everything is in place and secure.

At some point, the hedge will grow, so make sure you expand and adjust the wire.

Storing Extra Wiring

Roll The Wiring Up: If you have excessive wiring, neatly roll it up and place it in storage. Make sure the cut edges are on the inside of the roll to ensure no one is injured by handling it now or in the future.

Label Various Wiring Sizes:

If you have various kinds and sizes of wiring, it's a good idea to label them before placing them in storage. It will be easier in the future to grab what you are looking for.

Additional Suggestions

Working in a well-lit area will keep you safer when working on something for greater accuracy. If you have started another project, make sure you leave some extra material on each side so you can make adjustments.
