The Landfill Root Barrier is a product used to protect landfills from nearby tree root damage. This product comes in long rolls that have herbicide nodules of Trifluralin, that prohibit tree root tip cell division. The herbicide does not damage the tree, it only stops tree root growth in that particular direction.
