Mesh Lath For Your Stucco Installations

One of the most important elements that is often overlooked in stucco installation is mesh lath. Mesh lath plays a very important role in creating a durable, long-lasting stucco finish. Contractors, homeowners, and DIY enthusiasts require stucco for their projects. Understanding mesh lath is critical for getting the results they are looking for.

About Mesh Lath

Mesh lath or stucco mesh is a galvanized metal or fiberglass grid providing support for stucco to adhere to the surface. It works like a framework ensuring the stucco stays in place and is distributed evenly across the surface. The mesh lath is corrosion-resistant and will last for a very long time.

The Types Of Mesh Lath

Metal -The galvanized steel lath is the most commonly used lath for stucco applications. The metal mesh lath protects against corrosion and rust. Its strength and durability are perfect for exterior locations making it an excellent choice for various weather conditions.

Fiberglass – Made from woven fiberglass threads, it's lighter than the metal lath and used for interior applications where the moisture level is much lower than outside. Because fiberglass mesh resists alkalis, it's an excellent choice for some environments such as coastal areas.

Several Reasons For Using Mesh Lath

For Support – Mesh laths offer a stable base for stucco to adhere to by preventing sagging and cracking.

Even Distribution – The mesh ensures the stucco is evenly spread across the surface which is important for a nice finish.

Long-Lasting – Reinforcing the stucco means the mesh lath will increase the life of the application, making it a great deal more resistant to weather conditions and physical impacts.

Example – Mesh Lath In An Exterior Stucco Application

A homeowner wants to apply stucco to their new home but the home's exterior walls are made of plywood which is not a good surface for directly applying stucco. First off, they need to install a moisture barrier such as building paper over the plywood. Next, a metal mesh lath must be securely attached to the surface, creating a sturdy framework. Lastly, the stucco must be applied in layers with the mesh lath ensuring each layer properly adheres and cures for a smooth and durable finish.

Installation

If you will be installing the mesh lath by yourself, here are steps to help you out:

Fastening The Metal Lath – Be sure the mesh lath is fastened securely to the substrate. Use corrosion-resistant fasteners and they penetrate the studs or other structural elements.

Overlap The Edges – Installing several sheets of mesh lath, make sure to overlap the edges by at least one inch to create a continuous, strong base for the stucco.

Make It Taut With No Wrinkles – Make sure the mesh lath is taut and free of wrinkles before applying the stucco. Wrinkles will create an uneven application and possible weak spots in the stucco.

In Conclusion

Mesh lath is a small but important part of stucco applications. Providing a supportive framework will guarantee your stucco finish is durable and aesthetically pleasing. Whether you are dealing with a new construction project or a renovation project, understanding and properly using mesh lath can lead to a long life and a great look to your stucco finish.
