Connecting HDPE Pieces

There are two ways to connect multiple pieces of HDPE together. One method is to overlap the HDPE and use our double sided seam tape to connect the two pieces. The other method is to butt the ends together and use our 17 mil single sided seam tape to create a solid connection.

Overlap Method
(for underground installations)

The overlap method is best used when connecting two pieces of HDPE in a buried application. Due to the overlap, a ridge is exposed which is not ideal when installed in exposed vertical or flat installations in high traffic areas as there is a possibility of an object catching on the ridge and pulling the two pieces apart.

In a below ground installation, the large overlap area provides a more water resistant connection as well as enhanced protection against tree and plant root intrusion.

End to End Method
(for exposed installations)

When installing HDPE on a wall, floor or anywhere that is exposed, the end to end method provides a secure connection and does not leave any ridges exposed to potential catching by a person or object.

HDPE Plastic: Many Applications and Benefits

HDPE or high-density polyethylene is a thermoplastic polymer made from petroleum and is often used in plastic injection molding. When this plastic is heated, it can be formed into just about anything you might need for a new product. Once it cools off, it will become very hard again. HDPE plastic is incredibly pliable when heated so you should not have any problems shaping it to what you need thanks to the plastic injection molding process.

Because HDPE has a high melting point, it's perfect for molding in different shapes and sizes for what you need.

Just a little history, This material was first created in the 1930s and used for short-wave radar cabling during World War Two.

    HDPE's Many Advantages

Because this material has so many excellent qualities, it's great for use in many different manufacturing fields. Its lightweight makes it perfect for cartons and other containers for shipping and transportation without added weight. Also, HDPE is the popular choice for automotive parts such as gas tanks and other components. Even though it's a lighter plastic, it can stand up to heavy use due to its strength and long-lasting qualities.

For household use, many people know this plastic is dishwasher-safe and durable enough for constant use and will continue to last.

Other advantages of using HDPE plastic, it offers great resistance to impacts, chemical damage, and other external factors that will easily destroy other plastics. Outside chairs and tables made from HDPE can remain outside in most weather conditions, unlike other plastics.

HDPE is immune to water and humid conditions, solvents, acids, and chemicals. It resists mildew, corrosion, rust, rot, and will not fall prey to insect damage. Because of these qualities, HDPE is the best material for underground piping.

Molded products can be finished in a spectrum of colors and textures both opaque and transparent. Adding color to HDPE plastic can actually strengthen the finish even more. HDPE also has the ability to print images, logos, and labels. Because HDPE has so many versatile uses, it's just amazing.

    Lightweight And Ready To Roll

HDPE's lighter weight has allowed it to replace much heavier materials that are far from environmentally friendly. Even with their high demands, many industries and manufacturers are relying on HDPE to save more energy than going back to the days of extracting steel from iron ore. HDPE has shown it can help manufacturers contribute to sustainable goals, a cleaner planet, and zero carbon.

    Recyclable Is Key

HDPE products are all recyclable leading to fewer items ending up in landfills and reducing their carbon footprint. This is because HDPE plastic can be melted down into a liquid form and turned into a new product. If a clean environment is important to you, keeping things out of landfills is one of the best ways to make it happen.

To find out if your container is made from HDPE and recycled, look for the symbol that's usually on the bottom of the container,. The symbol is a triangle formed by arrows and the number 2 is in the center of it. The number 2 means it's recyclable. In some cases, “HDPE” might be printed below or near the symbol.
