Our under fence weed barrier is ideal for situations where invasive weeds are persistently encroaching on your landscape. The barrier is contracted from heavy-duty HDPE plastic and is available in two thicknesses; 40 mil, 60 mil, and 80 mil. The material is both tear and puncture resistant and designed to repel even the most aggressive weeds. The material is available in 10", 18”, and 24” wide rolls which can be easily cut down to suite your specific installation. The material is shipped in 100’ rolls and is made in the USA.

To install simply dig a trench under your fence, place the barrier vertically in the ground and then attach to the bottom of the fence using screws and washers (not included). Finally, backfill around the under fence weed barrier to help conceal the plastic. The material can be painted to match your fence or simply add additional backfill to conceal the barrier.

Note: Our HDPE plastic is only available in roll widths up to 96 inches (8 feet).

Connecting HDPE Pieces

There are two ways to connect multiple pieces of HDPE together. One method is to overlap the HDPE and use our double sided seam tape to connect the two pieces. The other method is to butt the ends together and use our 17 mil single sided seam tape to create a solid connection.

Overlap Method
(for underground installations)

The overlap method is best used when connecting two pieces of HDPE in a buried application. Due to the overlap, a ridge is exposed which is not ideal when installed in exposed vertical or flat installations in high traffic areas as there is a possibility of an object catching on the ridge and pulling the two pieces apart.

In a below ground installation, the large overlap area provides a more water resistant connection as well as enhanced protection against tree and plant root intrusion.

End to End Method (for exposed installations)

When installing HDPE on a wall, floor or anywhere that is exposed, the end to end method provides a secure connection and does not leave any ridges exposed to potential catching by a person or object.

    You may be new at gardening or have spent too much time trying to keep weeds under control with very little effect. The sooner you can eliminate weeds, the better your odds are to have a healthy, weed-free garden. Weeds are plants that take root in gardens and then multiply out of control.

    Use Pre-Emergent Herbicides

    If you want to prevent weeds from growing from the very beginning, you need a pre-emergent herbicide to stop weeds and weed seeds from germinating. These herbicides are excellent choices for preventing the growth of weeds. They are created to target certain combinations of weeds and weed families.

    Apply the pre-emergent to your garden before weed seeds can germinate in the early spring or after cultivating. After treating the area with a pre-emergent, give the area a good soaking as water will activate the pre-emergent. The water draws the herbicides down into the seed level for great results.

    Apply Mulch To Your Beds

    One natural and effective way to prevent weeds from moving into your garden is the use of mulch. Apply a thick layer of organic mulch around 2 inches deep in the garden area. You must avoid the base of your plants and shrubs. Mulch has the ability to help your soil retain moisture and will smother any small weeds by creating an unfriendly environment for any tilled-up weed seeds. Even though non-organic mulches, including landscaping fabric and plastic, last longer than organic mulch like cedar, leaves, and pine needles, they do not break down in order to create a healthy soil environment.

    Weeds absolutely love open, sunny spaces between your plants. Plants such as vegetables, flowers, and shrubs should have the closest recommended spacing. To eliminate open spaces where weeds will pop up, consider using block spacing instead of growing in rows.

    Prevent Hitchhikers

    Young plants you purchase from your local nursery will carry weeds along with them. Even in a nursery environment, weeds will spread. You should thoroughly inspect all new transplants very closely to make sure they are not bringing any unwanted weeds along for the ride. If you see seeds or sprouts, make sure to pull out any undesirables before transplanting them into your garden.
