The plastic membrane for waterproofing is made in the USA from 100% High-density polyethylene (HDPE). It is available in various sizes and thicknesses. The thicknesses range from 30 mil to 100 mil ( a mil is a 1,000th of an inch). Roll heights range from 10” to 60” with the lengths mainly being 100’ with a few rolls being 80’ in length. They are waterproof, UV resistant, and non-biodegradable. The plastic is also resistant to insect and rodent damage, will not rot/mildew. Multiple rolls of HDPE can be connected using the double sided HDPE seam tape.

Above in picture 2: The barrier has been placed a few inches away from the wall to allow for visual inspection to ensure that water does not go around the barrier and pool against the wall.

This material is stocked in Kansas City and typically ships within one business day.

Connecting HDPE Pieces

There are two ways to connect multiple pieces of HDPE together. One method is to overlap the HDPE and use our double sided seam tape to connect the two pieces. The other method is to butt the ends together and use our 17 mil single sided seam tape to create a solid connection.

Overlap Method
(for underground installations)

The overlap method is best used when connecting two pieces of HDPE in a buried application. Due to the overlap, a ridge is exposed which is not ideal when installed in exposed vertical or flat installations in high traffic areas as there is a possibility of an object catching on the ridge and pulling the two pieces apart.

In a below ground installation, the large overlap area provides a more water resistant connection as well as enhanced protection against tree and plant root intrusion.

End to End Method
(for exposed installations)

When installing HDPE on a wall, floor or anywhere that is exposed, the end to end method provides a secure connection and does not leave any ridges exposed to potential catching by a person or object.

    How To Properly Waterproof Your House Foundation From Damaging Moisture

    If you have a finished foundation you want to protect from the infiltration of water and humidity without having to remove walls to get to the foundation, you need to waterproof the foundation from the outside. Here are the 4 steps required to create the protection you are looking for:

    Dig The Ground Around Your Foundation's Perimeter

    In order to waterproof the exterior foundation you have to dig up the soil around the entire perimeter of the building. This requires digging down to the base of the concrete footing to get access to the foundation. You might have to remove sidewalks, landscaping, and/or decking. Before doing so, you will have to get an occupancy permit first. It's highly recommended you hire a company that offers residential excavation services to protect your property. These companies will provide the equipment needed for the proper excavation requirements.

    If your project is a condominium or a multi-unit building, your best choice is hiring a company that offers multi-unit building excavation services.

    Make Sure To Seal All The Cracks In The Concrete

    After the foundation is fully exposed, you must check for cracks or defects, including honeycombing, in the foundation caused by water and moisture contamination in the basement. If you find defects, you have to repair them to ensure your foundation is once again waterproofed. There are methods you should use such as injecting epoxy resin or polyurethane to seal cracks in the concrete and stop water from spreading between the interior and exterior of your foundation.

    Secure A Waterproofing Membrane To the Outside Of the Foundation

    The concrete used for building foundations is very porous so even if there are no cracks, it will let water and moisture in if the soil around it is saturated with water. In order to prevent moisture from reaching the foundation, you must attach a waterproofing membrane to the outside of the foundation.

    There are a few different membrane options to waterproof the foundation. There are synthetic rubber elastomer membranes and honeycomb membranes made up of two layers that are separated by sir pockets. The honeycomb membrane will reduce the pressure caused by water against the foundation and offer some drainage. To get the best results, you should cover the footing with the membrane. Also, the membrane should extend above ground level.

    Another option is to use a HDPE membrane which can be placed next to the foundation wall. This type of membrane is most effective at diverting ground water along and away from the foundation wall. These membranes are typically sold in 100’ rolls and are available in a wide variety of different heights and thicknesses.

    Backfill The Trench Around The Foundation

    After the waterproofing membrane has been installed and secured, you have to backfill the trench around the building. Before backfilling the trench, this is a good time to check the condition of the foundation drain. You should cover it with clean gravel and a permeable geotextile material to provide good drainage instead of allowing water to reach the new waterproofed foundation.
